This afternoon in Valparaíso, acting Minister of Foreign Minister, Edgardo Riveros, along with Ambassador of the United States to Chile, Michael Hammer, participated in the unveiling of a mural to commemorate Earth Day and as part of the second “Our Ocean” conference which is being organized by the Government of Chile and will be held on October 5th and 6th in Valparaíso.
The conference will call on all countries to take effective measures to protect the oceans and to create marine protected areas. “The ocean is crucial for our people, and with this kind of activity and especially with the conference, we hope to make progress and concrete actions with the invited governments,” said Under-Secretary Riveros.
The mural was designed by artist Rodrigo Quiroz who, along with a group of children and young volunteers, painted an area 17 meters long and 6 meters high in the Caleta El Membrillo. The activity aims to encourage children to use less plastic and to recycle or reuse the containers. The event is sponsored by the US Embassy in Santiago, with the support of the Municipality of Valparaíso and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile.
