The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heraldo Muñoz, met with the Intendant of Valparaíso, Ricardo Bravo, to discuss the “Our Ocean” conference. The Minister explained that this event, to be held in Region V on October 5th and 6th, “aims at protecting our oceans against the threats of acidification, illegal fishing and pollution.”
The conference, to be held at the Hotel Miramar in Viña del Mar, will be inaugurated by President Michelle Bachelet. Parallel activities will be held in Valparaíso, a short 10km drive from Viña del Mar. The Minister noted that it was hoped that the event would permit “the beauties of the port and Region V to be made visible.”
The Secretary of State of the United States, John Kerry, who held the first version of “Our Ocean” last year in Washington, D.C., will attend the meeting. Other figures who confirmed their attendance are Prince Albert II of Monaco; EU Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella; Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, BørgeBrende; and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, Murray McCully.
The Foreign Minister also said that “we will have a significant presence of civil society and of global non-governmental organizations interested in the conservation of the oceans.”
The Minister discussed other issues with Intendant Bravo, such as connectivity with Argentina through the Los Libertadores passage, and the need to streamline the flow of tourists between the two countries, especially with the upcoming Copa America when the Region of Valparaíso will surely receive many visitors.
