The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heraldo Muñoz, spoke at the “Our Ocean” Conference organized by the State Department of the United States, held Washington, D.C. During his speech, the Secretary of State reiterated Chile’s commitment to the protection of the ocean and announced the accession of Chile to the “1995 United Nations New York Agreement on Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks” and strengthening the policy of our country to Combat Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU).
“Our Pacific Ocean is threatened and we must make greater efforts to protect it on global, regional and national levels. At the regional level, we share and support the efforts of the UN system through Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs) with special emphasis on the role of international cooperation. At the national level, States, together with all stakeholders should work together to achieve the objectives of sustainability,” said the Foreign Minister in his presentation.
These commitments are the result of the consensus reached in the Sectoral Working Group that the Foreign Ministry coordinated with the support of all sectors involved.
Foreign Minister Muñoz was one of the 5 speakers at this meeting, which counted on the presence of the President of the Republic of Palau, Norway, Togo and the High Representative of the World Bank.
“We move toward the conservation and sustainable use of our oceans. Current and future generations will thank us,” said Minister Muñoz.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs also announced that the next session of “Our Ocean,” to be held in 2015, will be held in Valparaiso, Chile.
During the afternoon, Foreign Minister Muñoz met with Iowa Senator Thomas Harkin and Representative George Miller of California. He will also participate in the “Chile’s New Foreign Policy” Conference at the Wilson Center, and later will meet with the US Trade Representative (USTR), Michael Froman.
